Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.
The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he said. "Including them were numerous British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."
Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
