England and Welsh Pitted Together for RWC 2027 Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major early clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at Twickenham contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group once again, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the pools conclude according to the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
