Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of personalities, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Revealing details for the third episode of the new season lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

Episode 3 concluded with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of characters who will separate from the main group to begin their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

The Soldiers table consists of Teor Pridesire (portrayed by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that having everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before splitting into three separate parties: Warriors, Schemers, and Explorers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem out of place, but the actions of the latest installment make it clear why these particular heroes are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team knows exactly where to head next after a violent opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise started the story’s plot—used the enemy for his own means, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then paid off his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, desires vengeance.
  • The adventurer has experience in the region and warns that it is a nasty location.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as key figures in the powerful family could assist the team access locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character vowed a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the powers that rule the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The rogue and The character are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer turned against the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the clan.

This results in them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we discover that the warrior group will not appear the following episode, leaving the remaining eight players to round up the Questers and Schemers tables.

Audiences can look forward to discovering which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
